About My Craft & Materials
Tatting is a traditional handcraft technique primarily used to create delicate, openwork lace or decorative items. It originated in Europe between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, gaining particular popularity during the Victorian era. Tatted works are commonly used to adorn clothing, handkerchiefs, tablecloths, baby accessories, and wedding decorations.
Incorporating metallic thread, imported seed beads, and natural gemstones into tatting is a highly creative modern approach that enhances the traditional lace craft with greater decorative appeal and contemporary style—making it especially well-suited for creating earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants, and other jewelry pieces.
Indeed, tatted jewelry is exceptionally delicate and can even be described as one of the handcrafted accessories renowned for its “micro-engraving-like intricacy.”
Why is tatted jewelry considered so delicate?
1. Fine Structure and Openwork Transparency
Tatting forms rings and chains by knotting fine threads, creating geometrically symmetrical, repetitive, and orderly lace patterns.
The finished pieces are lightweight, breathable, and highly three-dimensional. From a distance, they resemble lace, while up close, the meticulous craftsmanship of each handmade knot becomes evident.
2. Ultra-Fine Threads and Meticulous Technique
It often employs No. 40, 60, or even No. 80 cotton threads (thinner than human hair), requiring patience and good lighting to work with.
Each double stitch must be evenly and tightly executed, as even slight variations in tension can affect the overall aesthetic.
3. Incorporation of High-End Decorative Elements
Adding imported seed beads (such as Japanese Miyuki or Toho beads), natural gemstones (like moonstone or garnet), or metallic threads enhances the luxury and design appeal.
Beads are precisely placed, often serving as visual focal points that elevate the overall sophistication
4. Rich Details in the Finished Product
A small pair of earrings may contain dozens of handmade knots and over ten micro-beads.
Pendant edges often feature intricate lacework in wavy, scalloped, or floral patterns, creating distinct layers and depth.
Custom Orders & Personalization
We accept custom tatting orders and can create exclusive pieces based on your preferred color, thread material, dimensions, and decorative elements (such as beads or gemstones). Please share your ideas or reference images, and we will provide a design proposal and quotation for you!
Custom Order Process
1. Needs Communication
Provide style reference images or describe your ideas (including style, purpose, and preferences).
Choose thread material (cotton, silk, metallic thread, etc.), color, and thickness (e.g., No. 80 fine cotton thread).
Confirm accessories (beads, clasps, metal components, etc.).
2. Sizing and Details Confirmation
Specify jewelry dimensions (e.g., necklace length, earring drop length).
Note any special requirements (e.g., waterproof treatment, lightweight design).
3. Quotation and Timeline
Provide a quotation based on complexity, material costs, and labor hours.
Agree on a production timeline (typically 3–7 days for simple designs, 1–4 weeks for complex designs).
4. Production and Communication
At the start of production, photos of materials/accessories can be provided for confirmation.
For complex pieces, progress updates (e.g., at 50% completion) may be shared.
5. Finished Product Delivery
Provide detailed multi-angle photos or videos of the finished product for confirmation.
1. Production Timeline Reference by Work Type
Type of Work Average Timeline Description
Simple Small Items 1-3 days E.g., single-layer bookmarks, mini earrings, basic rings, etc.
Medium-Complexity Jewelry 3-7 days E.g., multi-layered lace pendants, bracelets with a small number of beads, symmetrical earrings, etc.
Intricate & Complex Works 1-4 weeks E.g., large necklace sets (including necklace, earrings, bracelet), bridal headpieces, multi-element decorative items, etc.
Jewelry Care
Wipe with a slightly damp microfiber cloth instead of soaking.
If beads are glued (not sewn on), try to avoid contact with water.
1. Light Protection & Moisture Prevention
Store in a cool, dry place away from windows and bathrooms.
Food-grade desiccant packets can be placed near the storage box (avoid direct contact with jewelry).
2. Container Material
Opt for airtight boxes with felt lining or transparent zippered bags (avoid PVC materials).
For antique tatting pieces, use acid-free paper wrapping combined with a sealed box for dual protection.
3. Separation & Pressure Prevention
In multi-layered storage boxes, keep each piece of jewelry in an independent compartment to avoid crushing and deformation.
For easily deformable openwork sections, fill them with curled acid-free tissue paper.
